Help with depression Bible-style III, unearthly comforts

We need help with depression when our pillows and blankets don't even give us the comfort we need to sleep through the night. Emotional pain is crippling. We may just want to stay still–melted into the floor, couch or bed. We're depressed and we just can't find comfort no matter what we do. We are tossing and turning when we are trying to sleep; we are dragging our feet, frowning, and crying when we try to move about the day.

How can we find answers in the Bible to help us get through the day? When we are depressed, we may need time to deal with the reason for our sadness. We may miss someone terribly or see no answer to financial problems. Whatever the reason, we don't have to be completely overcome. God wants to be our comfort–if nothing else at this time in our despair.

Among all my troubled thoughts, your comforts are the delight of my soul. – Psalms 94:19, BBE

Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted. – Matthew 5:4, HCSB

There are so many good things that God wants to give us that have to do with our emotional well-being. "God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer." (Ephesians 1:3b, GW). One of those spiritual blessings is an unearthly comfort that will ease and rest our minds. If you seek nothing else to help with your depression and emotional pain, seek out God's comfort.

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort. He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God. – II Corinthians 1:3,4, GW

Not only will God comfort us when we are in emotional pain, He will enable us to be an agent of comfort to someone else afterwards. There is nothing more satisfying or fulfilling than to be used by God to help someone else. That can even bring us more healing in our own despair.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and a good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. – II Thessalonians 2:16,17, EMTV

The best way to seek God's comfort for help with depression is to pray; ask God. Cry out to Him in your sadness and sleeplessness. Better yet, find one or two people who will pray with you.

Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. – Matthew 18:19,20, ESV
