Disturbing experiments on kittens are taking place at Cardiff University. Ricky Gervais, well known British actor, has joined the BUAV in calling for an end to these experiments.
I am appalled that kittens are being deprived of sight in one eye by having their eyelids sewn shut. I thought sickening experiments like these were a thing of the past. I support the BUAV in calling for this research to be stopped.”
While some kittens are raised in complete darkness, others are deprived of the sight in one eye by having their eyelids sewn shut. The kittens are anesthetized artificially ventilated and paralyzed with a drug to prevent eye movements. They are subjected to highly invasive head surgery during which the skin was cut away, the skull was opened and the brain was exposed for recordings. After various tests all the baby kittens are killed and parts of their brain removed for analysis.
Sophisticated methods of studying vision and the neurologic processes underlying it in human beings already exist. Not only is this experiment inhumane, it is unnecessary for human health.
With all of our current technology and advancements there is simply no excuse for the continued barbaric use and abuse of any living creature, human or other. These animals feel as we feel. They think, reason, grieve. They understand when they are being treated cruelly. They experience the same range of emotion including fear and loneliness, sadness and joy as we do. This isn't science, it's sadistic barbaric torture of a defenseless baby. How any decent human being can harm a trusting needy little baby is beyond inhumane, it's truly evil.
