Help take the Great Backyard Bird Count now

The “Great Backyard Bird Count” is a valuable event conducted by local naturalists in Baltimore. The 2012 count will take place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday - February 18 and 19. Everyone is invited to participate.

Naturalists are asking whoever might be interested in a weekend birding experience to gather in Robert E. Lee Park, 1000 Lakeside Drive, Baltimore MD 21209. No experience is necessary. However, a desire to have a wintry birding experience will be helpful as residents of Baltimore County and surrounding area begin to gather information on winter birds. Participants will work from 8 a.m. to 12 noon each day.

The Robert E. Lee Park Nature Council is a volunteer organization dedicated to the stewardship of the Robert E. Lee Park for recreation and educational programs. This park is owned and operated by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. Many groups have joined together to make this a family friendly, well preserved natural environment. The park contains several historic structures.

This event is conducted by the members of the Baltimore Bird Club. Members will assist in the count, educate and fascinate participants with their knowledge of Baltimore's bird population. Naturalists will also share stories of their encounters with live birds. Crafts and games will be provided for children who participate. A warm fire and hot chocolate will also be provided to reduce the winter chill.

For more information visit the Robert E. Lee Park Nature Council website.  Be sure to check the website for any cancellation notice if Father Winter comes calling this weekend.
