Although the current economic situation is affecting everyone across the country, there are times when a crisis impacting a single family can touch people throughout a community. Local publisher Dylan Williams, after being diagnosed with cancer, has let it be known that he would appreciate supporters making purchases from the Sparkplug Comic Books Store.
Comics critic Rob Clough posted an appeal on behalf of Williams today, asking readers to patronize the online shop as a way of providing financial support to the publisher. Clough included a "suggested shopping list" of thirteen titles that may appeal to potential customers, including Asthma by John Hankiewicz.
The Comics Reporter's Tom Spurgeon also picked up the story, urging "anyone with the slightest appetite for art comics" to look over the selection. Spurgeon included his own list of titles, mentioning David E. King's Lemon Styles as one of his favorites of 2010.
Portland's Sparkplug Comic Books has been a Rose City fixture since it was founded in 2002. An independent publisher covering a wide range of subjects and styles, Sparkplug publishes everything from Steve Ditko reprints to self-published minicomics to anthologies such as Papercutter, giving new artists much-needed exposure
