Dracula is always on the look-out for another satisfying meal of human blood. The Coterie Theatre and Community Blood Center, the primary supplier of blood for area hospitals will help satisfy that thirst with a blood drive on Saturday, October 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive will take place in the Coterie Lab, next to the box office on level one at Crown Center. A coupon for one free admission to any performance of Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker will be given to all that donate to this worthy cause.
October is an eerie month, when things go bump in the night and children and adults dress in costume as their favorite characters. One of those characters is Dracula, the blood thirsty vampire from Bram Stokers Gothic novel, Dracula. Zachary Andrews a graduate of the UMKC acting program not only will don the cape of Dracula but will play the roles of all the characters in the Coterie Theatre production of Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker.
Jonathan Harker is sent to Castle Dracula to deliver papers to coffin sleeping count. It is there he plays witness to horrifying sights, which he writes about in his journal entry. This one-actor tour-de-force adheres closely to the original Stoker novel.
“We love this script, which originated at Orlando Shakes, because it is so faithful to the form of Bram Stoker’s original, which was written in journal and diary entries, telegrams and letters, etc. In this electrifying one man show, we get to hear the true source material performed from each of the character’s point of view” said Jeff Church the director for Dracula and the producing artist director for the Coterie.
Andrews is returning to Kansas City and the Coterie after being away for a year. He was last seen at the Coterie as Randy in The Outsiders. In Kansas City he has been seen on the stage of the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. He has performed across the country at The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Western Summer Theater, Riverside Theater and the Denver Center Theatre Company.
When asked about his the Coterie production he said, “This is, in many ways, the most faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel I have come across. Unlike the multitude of movies and handful of stage plays, the bulk of the text in this adaption is pulled directly from the novel, and nearly every major event is represented without embellishment.”
Recommended for audiences of preteen through adult, Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker runs from October 9 through October 27 at the Coterie Theatre in Crown Center.
