The 1940 US Census digital images arrive in just 40 days, on April 2, 2012, but the work to get the census indexed and fully useful to all Springfield family history and genealogy researchers will continue for many months. Will you join your friends and colleagues across the world in helping to index the census and 'Spread the Word?'
After you register, you get started by downloading and installing the software program for indexing. "Indexing is a simple, and engaging, activity. You view an image of the historical record in one pane and enter what you see into a customized, labeled grid in another pane. If you see the name Robert in the image, you type it in the designated cell in the grid. The names, dates, places, and other information you enter will become part of the online search, opening up that record's information in ways that weren't possible before.
This effort is a joint project of Archives, FamilySearch, and 'findmypast.' If you have indexed for FamilySearch before, you are already trained. The project leaders urge each of us to "Download a batch and try it out today." They will immediately send out the 1940-project-ready system to you and you can start creating records that will help just like you and me make impactful family history history connections. I have done indexing in the past. It is fun. Give it a try!
If you have a blog, be sure to check out the 'Spread the Word' project to help get more people involved, sooner. The more people involved, the sooner we will all have access to a fully indexed 1940 US Census. Please do it, today.
