Hedgehog and Chinchilla training day 1

The first day of training Peck, the pet hedgehog

Peck was removed from her cage around 1:30 PM this afternoon and was awake and moved around while being held.

However, once she was placed on the ground she didn't move from her spot but was okay with being touched, which is very good.  A variety of vegetable and fruit options were placed in front of her, however she did not seem to care for them, ignoring them all.

When picked up again she again was very active moving around while being handled.  She was then placed back into her cage where she immediately dug herself and went back to sleep.

The first day of training Elora, the pet chinchilla.

Due to Elora's habit to run around, chew things she shouldnt, and get into places she shouldn't, Elora is being kept in her cage for awhile during training.

Elora was fed a variety of fruits nuts and veggies using a set of tongs and a clicker for this session.

While the food was being given, the clicker went off, which will hopefully start to make a connection for Elora that the click means food.  She took all pieces of food offered and was not scared at all by the clicking sound.

Once she starts to make that connection a little bit, the click will sound slightly before food is offered, increasing the time until Elora understands a click means food.  This is called a bridge and is a very important tool in training animals.
