Hebert fined for hit on Cornish

According to Herb Zukowsky of the Montreal Gazette on Thursday, Kyries Hebert of the Montreal Alouettes has been fined the Canadian Football League maximum for his hit on Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish on Saturday night, a 29-8 victory by the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium.

Hebert, who can play safety or linebacker, ran quite a long way and delivered a hit to the head on Cornish, who suffered a concussion. If Cornish is out for an extended period of time it will be a big blow to the Calgary Stampders because Cornish was not only the top Canadian in the CFL last season, but was the most outstanding player as well.

Hebert's fine was half of his pay cheque, the most that can be handed out by the CFL. Ironically, Hebert won the 2013 Tom Pate Memorial Award, presented to the CFL player for sportsmanship and who has made a strong contribution to his community.

Hebert, who began his CFL career with the Ottawa Renegades in 2004, has played eight seasons in the CFL, also with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. There was strong speculation that CFL commissioner Mark Cohon would strongly consider suspending Hebert, but the commissioner did not decide to go that route.

Cornish was not the only Stampeder to suffer a serious injury on Saturday. Wide receiver Maurice Price broke his hand. Cornish had 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown with three receptions for 41 yards. While Price only caught one pass, but it was a 102 yard reception from quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell for a touchdown.

Good news for the Stampeders is that Cornish and Price each have a week to rest as the Stampeders have a bye in week two. The CFL also fined Stampeders defensive lineman Corey Mace for delivering a punch.

The Stampeders next game will be Saturday, July 12 in Toronto and their next home game will be Friday, July 18 against Hamilton at McMahon Stadium. Both games can be seen on TSN.
