Heavy rain this morning changing to heavy snow this afternoon

Low pressure will rapidly intensify as it moves through the Ohio Valley today. This system will pass to our south, however a strong surge of warm air aloft will keep the precipitation mainly rain through mid morning. By late morning, colder air will begin spreading south across northern Ohio, changing the rain to snow. A period of freezing rain and sleet will be possible during the transition.

This afternoon, most locations will see snow. The snow could be heavy at times, especially across the north. Winds will also increase dramatically with gusts in excess of 40 mph possible. This will create blizzard conditions at times, especially across the lake shore areas.

Any water from this morning's rain will freeze creating very slick driving conditions.

The snow will continue into this evening, then gradually taper to snow showers overnight. temperatures will plummet tonight with lows bottoming out in the lower single digits and wind chills falling to the double-digits below zero.

Total snow accumulations through tonight will be highest near the lake shore where some locations could pick up over 8 inches of snow. Amounts will be less further south with locations near Route 30 only picking up 1 to 3 inches.

Thursday will be breezy and cold with scattered snow showers possible during the morning. However, drier air should allow for some sunshine during the afternoon.

High pressure will build across the state on Friday, and temperatures will rapidly moderate.

Here is the forecast: For today, rain likely through mid morning, then changing to snow by early afternoon. A period of freezing rain and sleet is possible during the transition. The snow this afternoon could be locally heavy and there is also be some areas of blowing snow. Temperatures will fall into the 20s this afternoon. Winds becoming N 15-25 mph with higher gusts.

Tonight, snow and blowing snow this evening, tapering to snow showers overnight. Lows will be 0 to 5. Winds NW 15-25 mph with higher gusts. Wind chills will fall to -10 to -20.

Thursday, mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers, mainly during the morning. Highs will reach the upper teens to low 20s. Winds NW 10-20 mph. Wind chills -10 to -20.

Thursday night, partly cloudy with lows around 10.

Friday, partly sunny with highs near 50.
