(San Bernardino) – Congressman Gary Miller (R-42) announced his endorsement of San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Neil Derry. His is the latest in a series of heavy hitters making endorsements in county supervisor races.
“I am proud to endorse the re-election of San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry, said Congressman Miller. “He is an honest, responsive and effective representative for the residents of District 3.”
“Neil shares my strong opposition to higher taxes and wasteful government bureaucracy,” continued Miller. “As Supervisor, Neil is working to make San Bernardino County more business friendly by reducing costly government regulations, protecting local jobs and helping 3rd District communities attract new employers.”
Derry has held the office since 2008, after a contentious campaign where he beat out long-term incumbent Dennis Hansberger. Hansberger, an “old guard” Redlands Republican, has endorsed Derry’s opponent, San Manuel Tribal Chairman and Democrat, James Ramos.
“I’m honored to earn the support of a dedicated Conservative leader like Congressman Gary Miller,” declared Derry. “I look forward to teaming up with him this election to fight the job-killing government restrictions being imposed on San Bernardino County taxpayers and small businesses by the Obama Administration and the politicians in Sacramento.”
The race between Derry and Ramos is expected to be costly, far exceeding $1 million spent between the two of them. Both started campaigning against the other last year.
Also in the race are former Twenty-Nine Palms city councilman Jim Bagley and little-known county resident Robert Wilson. Ken Hunter, who ran in 2010 for the 59th Assembly District seat vacated by disgraced Assemblyman Anthony Adams, bowed out of the race and gave his endorsement to Derry.
In the First Supervisorial District, which covers from the top of the Cajon Pass to the Nevada and Arizona state lines and is the largest district in the contiguous United States, at least seven candidates have indicated they will run for the seat being vacated by current First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt. The list of candidates include: Ken Anderson, former field representative for Mitzelfelt and current field representative for Senator Sharon Runner; Bob Smith, former field representative for Mitzelfelt; Micheal Orme, former field representative for Mitzelfelt and current field representative for Congressman Buck McKeon; Russ Blewett, mayor of the city of Hesperia; Jermaine Wright, Sr., board member for Adelanto School District; Rick Roelle, councilman for the town of Apple Valley; and Mark Shoup, former councilman for the Town of Apple Valley and Chief Deputy Public Defender.
Of the group, Ken Anderson has garnered the most impressive list of endorsements so far. Anderson has received the endorsements of Assemblyman Steve Knight, Senator Sharon Runner, and Board of Equalization member George Runner.
"Ken's work in the First District speaks for itself. His experience as a local elected CSD Director, Community Liaison for Brad Mitzelfelt and Field Representative for Senator Sharon Runner are wonderful attributes. When added to his business experience and remarkable record of volunteer service he is, far and away, the best choice for Supervisor" Assemblyman Knight stated.
The endorsements are important for Anderson as he is one of the lesser-known candidates and they set him apart from the other candidates early in the election. "This endorsement (Knight) began to set the tone for my campaign. Assemblyman Knight's record of advocacy for public safety and fine representation of High Desert residents at a state level make his support that much more significant to me personally” said Anderson.
