There is no official Catholic membership card, which can be whipped out like an American Express Card, revealing full-fledged membership, with all the perks. The closest thing we have are marks which resemble Crucifixion. Faithful Catholics, and those masquerading as ones, wear similar clothes, drive similar cars, and live in similar neighborhoods.
Yet, that's where the similarity ends.
"Take courage and be a man. Keep the mandate of the LORD, your God, following his ways and observing his statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees..." 1 Kings 2:1-4, 10-12
Faithful Catholics, though as intellectually and experientially blessed as their cafeteria counterparts, obey the teaching of the Vicar of Christ, in the Pope, and the successors to the Apostles, in the Bishops, even when they struggle to understand why--even when they fully understand and yet don't agree. Their faith, as opposed to the anti-faith of their cafeteria neighbors, is faith in Jesus Christ--as He left His gospel in the hands of the apostles in Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium (teaching authority).
Cafeteria types, however, from their intellectual ivory towers in academia, from their crooked and politically driven power-positions, and from their comfy intimacy with the popular culture, deny Christ by denying the Apostolic Church.
They think they know better!
"Yours, O LORD, are grandeur and power, majesty, splendor, and glory.” 1 Chronicles 29:10-12
Faithful Catholics, though they too are prone to sinful pride, generally, and religiously, give God all the credit for their gifts, talents, and successes. For humility is a sure sign of faithful discipleship in Jesus Christ. The cafeteria type, however, believes more in the imminent Jesus of him, or her, self.
While the faithful Catholic gives God all the glory and the power and the majesty, the cafeteria type admires only the god they see in the mirror.
"So they went off and preached repentance." Mark 6:7-13
Faithful Catholics preach salvation in Jesus Christ--the Jesus of the gospels, as taught by the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. This includes the Cross as the necessary Way to the Resurrection. This means obedience to everything Jesus teaches. Everything! This also means Love, at all times, for all peoples, on God's Cross-born terms.
The cafeteria Catholic will have none of that!
They want Resurrection without the Cross. That is why they abort to avoid parenthood. That is why they euthanize instead of caring for the elderly. That is why they support gay 'marriage' instead of defending the Church, as not to risk their PC reputation. And that is why they use contraception--so they can decide when Life begins (and ends), continuing their earthly anti-evangelization of promiscuity.
Subsequently, they come to believe in their own deity.
And that is why the faithful shall be fed on the fullness of Jesus Christ while the cafeteria type will spiritually starve on the rotten fruit of their own slim pickings.
Let's only pray that faithful Catholic evangelization can help distinguish us from our counterfeit-cafeteria counterparts.
