I continue to be truly amazed at how accurate P.T. Barnum was when he said "there's a sucker born every minute."
Comes now Ted and Gayle Haggard, formerly of mega-church New Life in Colorado Springs. Ted was having sex for three years with Mike Jones of Denver, and because of his indiscretions, Ted lost his job as pastor and chief gay-basher. His wife Gayle decided to Stand By Her Man, and even wrote a book about her decision to stay. Both are proclaiming publicly how they feel it's only a matter of time before Ted will no longer be attracted to men. Celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters and Larry King have given this truly unbelievable couple a platform to espouse their hope-springs-eternal message when it comes to wiping the earth of homosexuality. Three-year-olds see the fallacy of what the Haggards are preaching, and four-year-olds get the joke. Too bad an entire world full of adults want to believe in love-ever-after, even after it's apparent that love had nothing to do with it.
The Haggards told Joy Behar that Tiger Woods can save his marriage. This bit of prime time advice is similar to Bill and Hilary Clinton giving advice to Tiger and Elin about how and why they should stay together. It would be entirely laughable, except for the fact that so many people (mostly women, I fear) believe this garbage and continue to swallow it, hook, line and sinker. This is a lot like the entire global warming debate, or those wackos who continue to claim that President Obama is a socialist. Despite the clear, concrete, no-question-about-it evidence, there are people who continue to believe and espouse a position that is completely blind to the facts. Ted Haggard will never be completely heterosexual, and thus, he will never be 'cured'. Why is so *&^%! important to so many people that he try to stay in his clearly broken marriage?
Elin is hopefully plotting her exit strategy and no doubt hiring the best lawyers possible. For her to stay in the marriage would be, at best, laughable. For Tiger to be in sexual rehab is laughable, and the fact that he is still saying that he is trying to save his marriage completes the comedy routine and keeps everybody laughing - at him. Having the Haggards give him advice rounds out the comedy routine. Pity the poor souls who really think that this is a drama that will have a happy ending. The ones who will have the happy ending are the pundits and the lawyers who will continue to make money as long as this drama continues to unfold.
Ultimately, I just don't get it. Why is love and marriage so important that we all have to deny what's right in front of our faces? Relationships last as long as they last. Nothing lasts forever, and truly, you should be aware of any commitment that requires you to honor, cherish and obey till death do us part. Honestly, it's a trap, one that no one can win and ultimately one that ruins millions of lives.
Apparently, I am one of the few people who sees the elephant in the room. While comforting to know that my sight and insight are intact, it does get lonely.
And, depending on who you talk to, downright dangerous. Here come the brides - and they are all coming after me.
