Former US Rep. Heather Wilson may be headed for victory in the campaign for the Republican nomination in New Mexico's US Senate race.
Her chief rival, Lt. Gov. John Sanchez, pulled out the race, citing the need for GOP unity in the election, The Hill reported Thursday.
Sanchez boasted the support of libertarian US Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).
Wilson, on the other hand, has the support of former US Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM), former Bush press secretary Art Fleischer, 13 of New Mexico's 14 state senators and 20 of the state's 33 house members, according to her website.
"As an Air Force officer, she worked with our NATO allies and in the United Kingdom," according to her official biography. "In 1989, she became director for European defense policy and arms control on the National Security Council staff at the White House under the first President Bush."
She served in Congress for 10 years and was a member the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. She is the only female war veteran to have ever served in Congress, she said.
Among items on her legislative agenda:
- "For the first time in American history, every citizen will be required to purchase a government approved product. If Washington can mandate how people must spend their money, there is no limit to government power. The law is unconstitutional and if it is not thrown out by the Supreme Court, I will fight to make sure it is repealed and replaced."
- "In the Senate, I will fight for a moratorium on new regulations (for small Business), and to simplify or rescind ones we already have."
- "In the Senate, I will fight everyday to make government live within its means."
- "It is the free enterprise system that gave America the strongest economy in the world. In the Senate, I will work to strengthen free enterprise so that we can get back to strong growth and job creation."
- "Three generations of my family have served in uniform. I have spent my adult life serving to protect our country and I will continue to do so in the Senate."
Date of the New Mexico primary is June 5.
