Heatbox, Steepwater, Case, and Karmin lead Friday's live music

DG's Tap House in Ames will host singer, looper, and beatboxer Heatbox Friday night at 9 p.m. The Minneapolis one-man entertainment system combines, hip hop, acapella, R&B, soul, and funk to create his unique sound. Heatbox does not use any pre-recorded music. Instead, he uses a loop machine to create his music live, level by level. Check him out in action in the nearby video (NSFW). The 21-plus show will have a $10 cover charge.

The Gas Lamp in Des Moines will have concert doubleheader on Friday. The music starts early with blues rock regulars Bob Pace and The Dangerous Band hosting the Friday Work Release Party from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The party has free food while it lasts and has a $5 cover charge. The 9 p.m. late show (21+) will feature Chicago blues rockers The Steepwater Band. Steepwater released their latest album Live & Humble last year. The band has opened for the likes of Bad Company, 38 Special, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sonny Landreth, and Buddy Guy. Tickets to see The Steepwater Band at the Gas Lamp are $10 through MidwesTix.

Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines will also host a doubleheader tomorrow night. At 6:30 p.m., 3-time Grammy nominee Peter Case will play the venue with Des Moines native Conrad Bascom as his opener. Case brings nearly 45 years of new wave, folk, rock, and blues material with him to the stage. Tickets for this all ages show are $15 at the door or through Tikly. The 10 p.m. late show will feature Ames rockers Reed with Des Moines grunge act CC and the Juniors and Des Moines rockers EightUp serving as openers. This will be a 21+ show with a $5 cover at the door.

Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan, collectively known as the pop duo Karmin, will bring their #Pulses Tour to Wooly's in Des Moines on Friday for a n 8 p.m. show. After three EPs and one cover album, Karmin finally released their debut full-length album Pulses in March of this year. The duo already has two #1 Dance hits, a platinum single, a gold single, two Teen Choice Award nominations, and one American Music Award to their credit. Opening for Karmin will be L.A. singer and songwriter Bonnie McKee. McKee has written songs for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rita Ora, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, and others, and she already has five BMI Pop Awards to her credit. Tickets for the all ages show are $19.50 in advance through the Wooly's box office and Ticketfly. Tickets will go up to $22 tomorrow.

The Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines will host another Mixology event on Friday, May 2. The cash bar will open at 5:30 p.m., and Mr. Baber's Neighbors (The Solar String Band) will take the state at 6 p.m. There will be live science program entitled "Chemistry: Oxidants Happen" at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is $5 for non-member (free to members), and you must be 21 or older to attend.

Item 9 and The Mad Hatters will hold a CD release event at the House of Bricks in Des Moines Friday at 8 p.m. The Iowa City modern vintage rock group is celebrating the release of their self-titled third album with a big ol' party. Also on the bill will be Des Moines indie groove rockers Mighty Shady, Ames alternative rockers Doctor Murdock, Des Moines alt-rockers Foxholes, and Des Moines grunge rockers CC and the Juniors. The show will have a $5 cover charge, and it is a 21+ event.

Finally, the Newton tailgate rock duo Level B Road will play a free show at Whiskey Dixx on Friday at 9 p.m. The show is a 21-and-older event.
