Hearts and Crafts - Valentine's Crafts for Families

It's February.  No more football for 6 months.  Baseball's spring training has not yet begun and you may be looking for something for the entire family to do together.

How about a family Valentine's Day craft project!  These are simple and easy to do and require little to no financial cost!

Project One -- Buttoned Heart

  • Find that button jar and put it to good use!  If you don't have a jar, you can pick up a variety pack of buttons at a craft store for minimal cost.  You will need to decide on a color scheme and will need varying shapes and sizes for visual interest.
  • Find some pretty wrapping paper you like or some scrap booking paper.  If you are using wrapping paper it is best to use spray adhesive to attach it to thin cardboard like a cereal box.
  • Make a heart template in the size you would like.
  • Using a variety of sizes and colors glue buttons around the outside of the template and then remove template.
  • Fill in the rest of the heart by gluing on buttons to fill in your heart.

Hint – for a nice present display heart project in a shadow box frame!

Project Two – Hearts and Flowers

  • Find scrap book paper in a color scheme you would like.
  • Find some wooden spools or purchase for small cost at craft store.  Paint spools in a color you like.
  • Using template or scrap booking punch make hearts from the paper.  You will need 15 per project.  The hearts should not be larger than 1” wide. Then fold in half having rounded portions overlapping and crease, and then unfold.
  • Cut out or punch out 3 small circles for center of the flower and then pierce a small hole in center of circle.
  • Glue 5 hearts to circle and insert floral wire (6”-7” in length) to the circle.  Twist wire into a small ball to create and twist again on the back side of flower to keep flower in place.
  • Place 3 flowers in the spool. Flowers should vary in height.

Hint – for an added touch use ribbon on the spool to decorate or use glitter glue to write a name on the “vase”

Project Three – “Milk” Glass Vases

  • Get any clear glass bottle (from wine, juice, baby food, etc.) and wash and dry it thoroughly.  Make sure you get off all of the label and glue!  If you don’t have bottle go to a thrift store – they usually have something clear along these lines!
  • Use water based paints and squirt liberally into the bottles.  Slowly turn the bottle on its side and slowly roll around gently tipping the bottle opening slightly down.
  • Allow paint to coat interior of the bottle.
  • Using a shoe box lined with wax paper or old margarine, yogurt or cottage cheese container, turn the bottle upside down and allow to dry.

Hint – if you do not use water based paint do not put real flower in the vase, they will die!

When you have finished your projects, email me a pic and I will create a slideshow to display the Hearts and Crafts!  Happy Valentine's Day!
