In statements released on Dec. 23, Svetlana Kanarikov, the mother of 3-year-old Kirill Kanarikov, the baby thrown from the rooftop of a 52-story apartment building in Manhattan on Dec. 22 in a father/son murder-suicide, said that the father killed Kirill “out of spite.”
Svetlana had already filed for divorce from her husband, Dmitriy Kanarikov, 35, and had temporary custody of Kirill while the mom and dad were embroiled in a bitter custody dispute, according to The Daily News.
“There was an incident of domestic violence two years before and since then, our relationship was dominated by his need to control me, until finally I had to flee,” Svetlana Kanarikov said on Dec. 23.
Dmitriy Kanarikov had been granted visitation visits with his son.
The mother now reports that she was nervous about Dmitriy’s visits with their son. It was after his first unsupervised visit with Kirill, that the father hurled his 3-year-old son from that 52-story rooftop, and then jumped to his own death.
He told her “he would take the child away” and "she would ‘shoot (herself) from grief.’ ”
The murder-suicide happened just before Dmitriy was scheduled to return his son to the mother.
Svetlana Kanarikov also shared that during their heated custody battle, “her husband threatened to take their son if she didn't leave everything to him in the separation.”
Svetlana said that her husband was a controlling and violent man. She now believes that the murder-suicide was premeditated and already planned out in advance of his visit with their son.
The mother referred to Sunday’s tragedy as Dmitriy Kanarikov’s “sick” way of stealing Kirill.
The mother said she’s been left “heartbroken.”
