Heart mini-marathon in downtown Cincinnati attracts throngs of runners

It was a breezy, chilly morning but the energy in the air is palpable. Runners geared in cold weather attire started to gather at 6th St and Broadway St. in downtown Cincinnati. The half- marathon was the first event on this cold Sunday, March 17, 2013 for the annual Heart mini-marathon sponsored by Mercyhealth and the American Heart Association.

Seasoned and first-time runners merge in a human traffic as they hurry to the start line. Some were rushing to the nearest portalet to empty unwanted baggage. At nearly freezing temperature of 36F, this will be a challenging feat for novices. Layered light clothing, face and head gears, and warm foot wear were standards. Some made use of black garbage bags to serve as wind breakers which is probably a cheap and smart move considering how light it was. As if nature is not contented with the chill it had brought, snow flurries fell down as the horn blew, to mark the start of the event. 7:45am.

Family, friends and well-wishers walked to nearby hotels and cafes as they wait for loved ones who had took off to Columbia Parkway in a mixed flat and hilly route. We expect half-marathoners and 15-km runners to crowd around the finish line around 9:00 to 10:00 this morning.
