The SeaWorld Park in Orlando, Florida is once again seeing a cancellation in shows from music artists, having already seen cancellations from two other artists. This time, it is now coming from Heart, who became the latest act to pull out of a show, amid pressure from animal rights campaigners.
The cancellation comes from the SeaWorld documentary Blackfish, which focused on the treatment of captive killer whales, sparking furors over alleged animal cruelty issues. Singer Willie Nelson and alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies are among the two acts to have pull out of shows as a result. On her Twitter page, guitarist Nancy Wilson confirmed the news, stating their show was planned months ago, and would have pulled out had they been aware of the controversy surrounding SeaWorld. Heart later received a message of thanks from the animals rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
In other music news, during a concert in Moscow, Elton John also took the time to express concern over Russia’s “inhumane” laws banning gay propaganda, expressing his condemn over the ban that outlaws the promotion of homosexuality to minors, as well as dedicating his show to Vladislay Tornovoi, a gay man killed because of his sexuality. He also pointed out despite receiving calls to boycott Russia as a protest over the new laws, John says he goes there because he feels he owes it to fans to perform, as well as having been asked by Russian’s LGBT community to come.
John is among to artists to speak out Russia’s laws, risking legal action from officials along with Lady Gaga and Madonna.
