The Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management (IDEM) announced Monday afternoon that a public hearing will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, on the Midwest Fertilizer Corp. proposed air permit. An informational meeting that is open to the public is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon High School auditorium on 700 Harriett Street in Mt. Vernon, Ind. The hearing will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Midwest Fertilizer Corp. has applied for a New Source Construction and Operating Permit that would allow it to construct and operate a stationary nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing facility in Mt. Vernon. The draft permit can be viewed online. IDEM will provide information at the meeting about the proposed facility and air permit. The hearing that follows will allow members of the public an opportunity to speak on the record. Written comments will also be accepted at that time.

Those unable to attend the hearing may send written comments to IDEM. Comments will be accepted until March 3, 2014, and should be sent to David Matusek, IDEM Office of Air Quality, 100 N. Senate Ave., IGCN 1003, Indianapolis, IN 46204-2251. IDEM has said that it will consider all comments before making a final decision on the air permit.
