It is certainly a big weekend. There are always lots of stuff to do for New Year’s – parties, football, getting started on those resolutions – but it is not typically a big weekend for new movies opening in theatres.
One of the few new movies opening this weekend in New Orleans is The Last Rites of Joe May, an overlooked indie drama about an aging and ill man’s final days.
The film chronicles the last few days in the life of Joe May, an aging, short money hustler who always believed that a glorious destiny awaited him around every corner. Now in his sixties, his health failing and resources dwindling, Joe is presented with one last shot at greatness . . .

The Last Rites stars Dennis Farina (Get Shorty, Snatch., Law & Order) as the lead, in addition to Chelcie Ross and Gary Cole. Farina has garnered some praise for his role as an old school gangster-type trying to redeem himself.
The film is written and directed by Joe Maggio, whose previous films have been well-recognized on the indie film festival circuit. His new film has also been well received during a limited theatrical run and now makes its New Orleans premiere this weekend.
The film opens Friday, December 30 at Chalmette Movies with two showtimes daily – 2:00 and 7:00 pm.
Chalmette Movies is open all day New Year’s Day as well, so ring in 2012 by catching a new movie!
So come out and support Chalmette Movies (8700 W. Judge Perez Dr. just 6 miles from the French Quarter) by catching this new film and/or others, so that the theater can continue bringing interesting films and events to the New Orleans-area.
