News from South Carolina resort Hilton Head Health Institute created a sensation at the summer spa show in Manhattan sponsored by the International Spa Association (ISPA).
Michael Tompkins, long-time head of Miraval resort, has been appointed chief executive and head of development, marking major expansion for the Hilton Head Health resort.
Opened in 1976 for weight loss programs, the focus at Hilton Head will now be holistic, providing a balanced approach to healthy vacations. From short breaks to total workouts, guests will be offered a range of activity to enhance total well-being.
Tompkins' success at Miraval was based on a similar approach. He rose to resort CEO and presidency of ISPA.
The Hilton Head Health Institute campus is ideally suited to provide balanced vacations. There are dozens of miles of trails for walking and biking amid nature preserves, expansive ocean beaches, and an almost perfect climate. A cluster of villas designed in Low Country southern style maintains a home-like base. Porches and traditional furniture add to the residential feel of single-story buildings.
Spa time at the Institute has been limited to sauna and massage, But with a full complement of fitness facilities. New buildings will expand spa offerings while maintaining the down-home look.
Located on a barrier island, the health resort nestles into a secluded environment, away from distractions. Open year-round, the resort is reached from a regional airport.
