Healthy tidbits: Homemade salad for the hard worker

In today’s fast-paced and unforgiving society, most people often do not have sufficient time to prepare meals for themselves. The end result of this will usually be a drive-thru run to the closest burger joint or a visit to a restaurant to satisfy those annoying hunger cravings.

Preparing meals does not always have to be a difficult task. This especially applies when making a small meal that is convenient to take to work and can be consumed during a lunch break. If your place of employment has a refrigerator, by all means take full advantage of it as often as possible to avoid costlier meals at dining establishments.

One small idea to experiment with is a homemade salad that requires very little time to make, fits conveniently into a small lunch box, and can be stored in the refrigerator until meal time. For example, here are all the ingredients that are needed:

1. Packaged Salad Mix
2. Walnuts
3. Blueberries
4. Organic Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

Nutritious ingredients such as these can be found at Fresh & Easy neighborhood markets located throughout Las Vegas. Currently, there are about 21 locations in Las Vegas, with more stores located in California and Arizona. Fresh & Easy products do not contain artificial preservatives and the stores sell a wide variety of organic foods for the health-conscious consumer.

Some foods, such as walnuts, are sold in a package that contains packets of smaller serving sizes. This makes it easier so that it is not necessary to estimate how much should be eaten in one sitting. One packet of walnuts is equal to one serving: 1 ounce of walnuts.

The ingredients are simply combined in a small plastic container: total prep time of literally less than 5 minutes. The most work involved is thawing blueberries (if bought frozen) under lukewarm running water for about 2 minutes.

This healthy meal supplies everything your body needs: quality protein (walnuts), healthy fats (walnuts and vinaigrette), and carbohydrates (blueberries and salad). It is a simple way to eat about 2 servings of vegetables without spending much time in the kitchen, and for only about 375 calories.

There are many options to make homemade salads that can be taken to your place of employment. Don’t be shy to experiment.
