It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it’s also the meal that’s the most often skipped. This smoothie makes breakfast easy because you can just throw a few ingredients in your food processor or blender and drink it on the go. Peanut butter, chocolate and banana create a delicious flavor combination that’s more like dessert than a healthy breakfast. (In fact, you’ll be tempted to enjoy this as a cold treat any time of day!)

In addition to the health benefits of fresh banana, this recipe gets extra fiber, protein and iron from peanut butter, oats, flaxseed, dark chocolate cocoa powder and almond milk. While you could leave out the oats and flaxseed to cut calories, they pack a lot of nutrients and help make the smoothie nice and thick. As a result, it has a milkshake-like texture. While this smoothie comes in at around 300 calories, it will keep you full longer than cereal, toast or many other quick breakfasts because of the protein and fiber. And you can’t say that about most things that taste like dessert!

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana, cut into quarters
  • 1 Tablespoon natural peanut butter (Smucker’s® used here)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dark chocolate cocoa powder (Hershey’s® used here)
  • 2 Tablespoons old-fashioned rolled oats (Quaker used here)
  • 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed (Bob’s Red Mill® used here)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (Almond Breeze® used here)

Directions:

  • Place all of the ingredients in a food processor or blender and mix until smooth.
  • Add more almond milk for a thinner consistency if desired.
  • Best if eaten immediately, but refrigerate if needed.
  • Makes 1 standard glass-sized serving.
