Healthy Substitute - Agave Nectar

As tempting as sugar is, your healthiest self should be mindful of how much of the white stuff you’re really ingesting. Too much sugar on a regular basis has been linked to diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, suppression of the immune system, and many other health concerns.

Additionally, sugar typically causes the popular sugar rush, which is always followed by the not so popular sugar crash. The cycle of the rush and the crash often lead to a craving for more sugar and overindulgence.

Fortunately, if you have a sweet tooth, there is a natural sweetener on the market that will satisfy you without contributing to your refined sugar intake for the day. Agave nectar is no longer only available in health stores; it can be found in your local grocery store.

Agave nectar comes from the agave plant grown in Mexico, the same plant that provides tequila. Although not low in calories, it does contain one important health benefit. Unlike sugar, it has a favorable glycemic profile, meaning that its fructose, which is the naturally occurring sugar in fruits and vegetables, will not cause a spike in your body’s insulin levels. In other words, agave nectar does not cause a sugar high or sugar crash. Agave nectar also contains inulin, which has been linked to higher levels of satiety and fullness. Basically, agave nectar is sweet like sugar but will keep you satisfied for much longer.

Agave nectar can be used wherever you would use sugar. Drizzle it in your coffee or over your morning oatmeal. Use it in baking and your cookies and cakes will be unbelievably moist. Enjoy satisfying your sweet tooth while maintaining the energy level you need.

I love to include agave nectar in smoothies, in particular. On the other (arguably less healthy) hand, replacing some of the simple syrup in a homemade margarita with agave nectar adds a little something special, nice, and almost unidentifiable to the classic cocktail.
