Healthy options for school lunches

Your child's success in school depends on many factors. One important one that you have control over is what your child eats. Starting the day with a balanced breakfast is just the beginning, the next step is to send your child to school with a lunch that is healthy and tasty! Here are a few kid-friendly lunches that can be sent in a bag, no heating required!

peanut butter and honey sandwich

Start with whole wheat bread, natural peanut butter and locally farmed honey. If your child does not like the crust, simply use a cute cookie cutter to cut out the middle. If your child's school is peanut-free you can try almond butter instead. Trader Joe's has a wide variety of peanut, almond and sunflower butters.

chicken salad in a pita

For a quick and easy meal, but pre-made chicken salad at your local Henry's Markets or Albertsons. Make sure your child's lunchbox is insulated and be sure to add an ice pack.

hard boiled eggs

You can hard-boil your eggs and put them in the refrigerator, they should last a few days. Send one to school with your child, just add a little salt and pepper to taste. Trader Joe's carries some yummy cage-free eggs for a reasonable price.

Homemade Lunchable

A few whole wheat crackers, some sliced turkey and cheese. This is one of the easiest lunches to put together and perfect for the picky-eater. Buy great sliced turkey at your local Albertsons.
