Palm Springs temperatures are beginning to rise again and parents are urged to pack an extra water bottle in their child's lunch boxes. Staying hydrated is important, but just as hydration levels drop, so do energy levels. Here are a few healthy snacks to consider packing into your daughter or son's lunch box.
- Ants on a log, or in simple terms, celery with peanut butter and a few raisins placed on top is a healthy treat option. Of course, you can sway away from peanut butter and try almond butter for a slightly different variation, being mindful of course, of your child's classroom rules on nut allergies, if there is a 'nut-free zone' policy in place.
- Whole-grain crackers with low-fat cheese work as a simple, budget friendly option.
- Frozen grapes are a fantastic treat when the temperatures are cradling triple digits. The night before school, rinse the grapes and then place them in a small container in your freezer. In the morning, pack the container into your child's lunch box for a refreshing, healthy snack.
- Whole-wheat pita bread with a small container of hummus. This is our family's favorite go-to snack. Hummus is a dip made from chick peas. Depending on your child's taste preference, you can also add in a dash of minced garlic. Or, in lieu of using pita bread, red bell pepper slices also taste great alongside hummus.
- Unsalted pretzels or air-popped popcorn make for an easy, non-messy snack alternative.
Healthy snacks offer nutrients important to your child's well-being and ability to control hunger between meals.
