With the holidays approaching quickly, it is no secret that around this time, we replace our “Healthy Habits” with our “Holiday Habits.” But don’t fret, there are some great ways to enjoy this holiday season without breaking those healthy habits we’ve spent all year building.
1. Fill up on Fiber
Fiber helps us to achieve a healthy weight and prevents us from over-eating or over- indulging. High fiber foods tend to take longer to chew, allowing time for the body to process that it is no longer hungry. You also tend to feel fuller, faster.
Some of my favorite high fiber foods I recommend for the holidays? Beans, brown rice, pears, bananas, and artichokes. As a side note, the recommended daily fiber intake is 25 grams for women and 35-40 grams for men, so feel free to indulge in these fiber rich foods long after the holiday season.
2. Dine with Red Wine
I get it. Even the thought of spending time with family makes you want to break out the hard liquor. But at only 25 calories per ounce, this vino can provide the pleasure without the guilt. Red wine is also known to be good for the heart and skin, so why not make the switch this holiday season?
3. Pick a little, snack a lot
They key here is proportion. How big are your holiday proportions going to be? Preparing some healthy snacks could be the way to go, and snacking on them throughout the day can help you from over-indulging on the sweet stuff.
That doesn’t mean you can partake and enjoy the sweet stuff, but you will enjoy less of it. An assorted veggie and cheese platter could be just the thing you need this holiday season.
