Healthy habits for 2012

The Time Square ball drop usually welcomes more than just a new year, it's often accompanied by a throbbing headache, sleep-deprivation, and a whole lot of football. Not exactly a day you would describe as resolute, huh? But luckily, it's also that fresh start you've been waiting for, so pop an Advil, down a few glasses of water, and challenge yourself to make 2012 -- and every year following -- your fittest year yet.

  1. Set priorities. We all know those people -- and maybe we've been one of them -- who start the year with a brand new gym membership, only to fall off the fitness bandwagon a month or two later. Keep your exercise routine fresh and you'll be more likely to stick to it. Instead of trudging away on the treadmill, sign up for a new class, follow along to a bodyrockTV workout or check out a fitness DVD from the library.
  2. Challenge yourself. Looking to make running your new hobby? Sign up for the Couch-to-5K Running Plan and pace your way to your first 3.1-mile trot.
  3. Cut the junk. Hitting the gym -- or pavement -- is one thing, but fine-tuning your eating habits is a whole different beast to battle. If your sweet tooth religiously shows up on your dental bill, try swapping out the sweets for wholesome fruits. If sodium-packed potato chips make your heart skip a beat, try refueling with a handful of peanuts or cashews. Filling the tank with nutrient-filled whole foods can translate into a smaller waistline, more energy and less trips to the doctor.
  4. Be friendly. And no, unfortunately this does not mean cozying up with Ben & Jerry's after a rough day at the office. Surround yourself with friends who have similar health-minded habits. Whether it's an exercise buddy or someone who doesn't scoff when you order a salmon-topped salad, an encouraging support system is often the key to success.
  5. Put your nose in the books. Fork out some extra dough for a subscription to your favorite health magazine. Or, better yet, sign up for free e-newsletters or blog updates. Educating yourself on healthy living is the best way to take charge of your health and stay motivated.
  6. Socialize 'n sweat. Turn lunch dates into leisurely strolls and happy hours into hikes. It'll save you a few bucks, and not to mention, several hundred calories.
