Healthy green smoothie recipe for a healthy new year

If your 2012 New Year's resolutions include less junk food and more healthy eating, consider starting your day with a green smoothie. No, it doesn't taste like salad - the fruits balance out the vegetables, and the lime takes away the bitterness of the greens.

Green smoothie devotees swear that drinking one first thing in the morning gives you tons of energy and starts the day on the right foot. And even if you sneak a cookie later in the day, at least you know you've already gotten your greens!

This recipe makes four to six servings. Make the whole batch, then freeze the extra in plastic containers. Defrost on the counter overnight to save time in the mornings. Dandelion greens are extremely nutrient-rich and are readily available at local Los Angeles farmers' markets, as well as at Whole Foods and health food stores.

Green smoothie

  • 2 bananas, peeled
  • flesh of 2 avocados
  • 2 cups kale, spinach or romaine lettuce
  • 1 cup dandelion greens
  • 1 whole lime (cut away skin and use the whole peeled fruit)
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, cored, skin on
  • 2 cups green grapes
