So here we are again, another week of eating healthy while introducing new foods to our diet. I have found that eating healthy can be challenging especially if you are one of those people who finds it hard to try new things. As I have said before my research has led me to find some really interesting foods, as well as fun recipes to go along with them. As I get older, I find that my taste buds are changing, they become more refined and will crave for high quality foods. I remember when I was younger, my rule of thumb was, if I can't pronounce it, then I can't eat it. LOL! my, have I come a long way.
I am not sure if I mentioned this before, but in my research, I found fifteen wonderful foods that start with A. I promised to share them with you as I continue my health journey. I hope as we go through these together you will be inspired to try these new and old foods and evolve our palettes one day at a time.
So without further a due, lets talk about this week's three foods that start with A.
1. Avocado - where do I start with this soft creamy green fruit? One of the health benefits of avocado is that it has anti-cancer benefits. Avocado is said to be rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients. The nutrients present in avocado cells have been observed to facilitate even greater oxidative and inflammatory stress which may cause cancer cells to die. With that one the resume do you need any more to be convinced? Many people are plagued with cholesterol problems. Another health benefit of avocado is that is helps regulate cholesterol. Avocados are rich in what is called oleic acid, as well as beta-sitosterol, which are known for helping decrease cholesterol contents significantly. Avocado is very rich in potassium. Consuming the right amount of potassium per day can greatly help protect one’s self from circulatory diseases like heart diseases, stroke, and high blood pressure. Avocado is rich in carotenoid lutein. Carotenoid lutein is known for combating oxidative stressing, cataracts and eye muscle degeneration. My recommendation... eat avocados, you can never go wrong... they Aztecs knew this way back in the 16th century.
2. Asparagus - I have to be really honest, I really do not like asparagus...but! it is one vegetable, that is so crucial to add to your daily consumption. Asparagus, is a detox, it contains about 300 mgs of potassium, which is known to reduce belly fat. It is also full of fibre, which cleanses the digestive system. Aside from potassium, asparagus is rich in vitamin A and folate as well as glutathione which all help with anti-aging purposes. the asparagus is considered a psycho-physiological aphrodisiac because of its shape. It is said to trigger the mind to have a physiological response. The French word for asparagus is asperge; asperge is a slang word for penis. LOL that one made me giggle. They also help against cancer, reduce pain and inflammation and prevent osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. And no vegetable is complete if it doesn't help fight against heart disease.
3. Acai Berry - pronounced A -sa -ee berry. Said to be a super-food, this wonderful berry helps with weight loss. Studies show that they help flush out up to 25lbs of toxins and waste. They help increase energy, and improve blood flow. Because of their unique properties, they help with healthier looking skin, better concentration, and enhances sexual performance. They detoxify the body and reduce cholesterol.
So what can I say? Lets eat more healthy everyday. These 3 foods above are a great place to start. Whether in a smoothie, a side or a dip, these foods will help you get closer to being the best healthy you, you can be.
To living your healthiest life... ¡Salud!
