When I started my research for this post, I was surprised to find how many great healthy foods start with A. So this post is a follow up to the my previous post. I find that my life is better when I allow room for decadence. Whether it comes from eating a tasty treat or from splurging on a pair of shoes from time to time, it makes my life all the more sweet. The same can be said for some of the food that I love to eat. I think that a lot of the foods are best at their natural state, this is when all you can take advantage all the good of whatever it is that you are eating.
So lets get start... Some of the foods I found in my research, include:
Apricot - they are not only colourful and tasty, they also contain several nutrients that promote good health. They are very high in beta-carotene and lycopene that promote heart health and prevent cancers. These two nutrients also protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, reducing the risk of developing atherosclerosis and several cardiovascular diseases. In addition to this, apricots are very high in vitamin A equivalents that protect from the degenerative effect of free radicals (oxidative stress) that tend to damage blood supply to the eyes and cause macular degeneration. They also are a very good source of fiber, which has several health benefits especially related to the health of the digestive tract: it prevents constipation and cancer-promoting conditions such as diverticulosis. I would recommend using this tasty fruit in a smoothie, or a fruit salad or as I do, by itself for a snack.
Arrowroot - in some places of the world it is called a taro root or the obedience plant, has so many great benefits. I remember eating this root as a child, it is white with really pretty purple spots all over the root. When it is cooked, the whole root turns purple. When I was a child, I did not know the wonderful benefits of this root, but I am glad my parents had the foresight to feed it to me. They are very nutritious for people suffering from chronic diseases such as bladder infections. They also are very good for people who are recovering from illnesses, (who knew there was chicken noodle soup before there was chicken noodle soup). They also have demulcent properties which means they help with treating bowel problems and also aids with digestion. Can be used as a relief nausea, and can also replenish nutrients lost after vomiting and diarrhea.
Arugula - Like other greens, arugula is one of very low calorie vegetable. Despite its low caloric value, it is rich in minerals, vitamins such as A, B-complexes, C, and K, anti-oxidants, and vital phytochemicals, that are very beneficial to one's health. Arugula is a good source of folates as well. So the next time you are looking for a green for your salad, I suggest arugula.
These are some of the foods I makes sure to consume on often. Honestly it can be hard introducing these food into your current diet, but it starts a little at a time. I just encourage you to try to incorporate these foods in your daily intake and lets start getting healthy.
To living your healthiest life... ¡Salud!
