With all of the varieties of ice cream on the freezer shelves, how is one to know which is the best to purchase and consume? Just how healthy are those brands that claim to be “all-natural,” or “healthy?" Let's take a peek at the ingredients of some of the more popular brands.
Kemps Old Fashioned All Natural:
Ingredients: Milkfat and nonfat milk, sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, whey, natural vanilla with vanilla beans, mono and diglycerides, gar gum, calcium sulfate, locust bean gum, sodium carbonate, carrageenan.
Edy’s
Ingredients (Spumoni): Whey (Dairy), skim milk, cream, sugar, corn syrup, spumoni fruit (pineapple, corn syrup, grapes, maraschino cherries, high fructose corn syrup, natural and artificial flavor, cellulose gum, dextrose, modified corn starch, carrageenan, disodium phosphate, Red 40), maltodextrin, roasted almonds (almonds, partially hydrogenated soybean oil), cocoa processed with alkali, Propylene Glycol Monostearate, guar gum, natural flavor, monoglycerides, high fructose corn syrup, pistachio paste, Yellow 5, cherry juice concentrate, Red 40, Blue 1,caramel color, soy lecithin, carrageenan.
Although all of the above ingredients are considered to be edible and appropriate for human consumption, why would anyone voluntarily put these artificial chemicals into their body? Filling your body with this crap is just simply ridiculous!
So what is a good choice? There are three varieties that are healthy.
Häagen-Dazs Five is the best on the market today. Although most Häagen-Dazs varieties contain real ingredients and are relatively pure, their line of Häagen-Dazs Five are incredibly healthy with mostly pure ingredients, this particular version is probably the purest on the market today. Each variety has only five real and pure ingredients (hence the name) including, skim milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks, and flavor. The current flavors include mint, ginger, coffee, passion fruit, brown sugar, and milk chocolate. With these pure and real ingredients, there is no need for hyperlinks to define them!
Ben and Jerry’s ranks second on the list. Although some varieties contain quite a few ingredients, they are mostly real with nothing artificial. Ben and Jerry’s also offers some organic varieties as well as those containing fair trade ingredients.
Breyers All-Natural Ice Cream ranks third on the list. If cost is a concern, Bryeers is an excellent choice as you get more than twice as much for the same cost as the other two . Some varieties are better, containing only six pure ingredients, while others include corn syrup, natural gums, and emulsifiers.
Bottom line - before you put something in your mouth, read the ingredient list. You know what milk, cream, sugar, and eggs are and you can picture them in your mind. However, can you picture high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavor, cellulose gum, dextrose, maltodextrin, or guar gum?

This article is very straightforward and helpful! I appreciated it that the author, Mary Thomas, said "crap" when that word just HAD to be said right then in the article. What great reporting!
Thank you, Amy. I tell it like it is!
