Healthful practices: tai chi and meditation

If you are looking for a healthful practice to incorporate into your new year, consider tai chi and yogic meditation offered in the Albuquerque area.

Marilyn Feeney and Michele Swanson of Garuda Tibetan Tai Chi note that tai chi can improve a person physically and mentally. Both in life as well as in tai chi, “accurate training leads to harmonious action. The precise, graceful moves of tai chi train the mind and body to work as one.” 1

Marilyn and Michele state that “the Tibetan tai chi attitude is that to be truly healthy you have to continually maintain and improve yourself. Real health starts with the inside of the body (i.e., internal organs) and radiates outward.” Tai chi can help to heal the organs and the immune system. It can restore a healthful balance that, if not maintained, could lead to injury and possibly to disease. 2

In addition, they affirm that tai chi restores balance to the inhalations and exhalations of the breath. However, most importantly, tai chi restores the mind and body: the mind, body, and breath all unified in the whole person. 3

Yoga and meditation teacher Jim Garner addresses the meditative dimension of yoga in a person’s health. Meditation brings one into the present moment. One of the benefits of this is that “you are not in a ‘manufactured’ psychological environment of fight or flight,” which can be a regular response to our anxious society. 4

In addition Jim states that solid research demonstrates many benefits of meditation: “intelligence scores are higher; creativity scores increase; a person’s ability to focus increases; people struggle less internally.” 5

Other documented health benefits include lower blood pressure, a more robust immune system, a lowered susceptibility to depression, and a stronger sense of self-worth. 6
