Diversified Radiology’s unique 24/7 staffing now includes after hours Pediatric Radiology, making them the only radiology group in the region to offer potentially overnight lifesaving care to thousands of families. The group announced the changes yesterday.
“You can be assured that if your child needs an imaging study at any hour of the night that you will get the same level of care that you would during the day and it will be from one of our highly trained radiologists, said Dr. Stephen George, President of Diversified Radiology. “It’s an additional peace of mind for any parent.”
Since many of the overnight cases happen in the emergency room, Diversified Radiology has hired doctors specifically for those demanding shifts.
“With children, getting it right the first time is paramount and that’s why we have a specific Pediatric Radiologist there to answer questions from the ER doctor or the parents, said Dr. Jonathan Brandon, Pediatric Radiologist. “When you’re dealing with a sick infant, you need to make decisions quickly.”
Diversified’s overnight staffing isn’t limited to children. The group also has local sub-specialists in Neuroradiology and Body Imaging working to provide 24/7 care to adults. This staffing model is unique among radiology groups across the country where many out-source their overnight work to doctors out of state or even out of the country.
“We’re reading mostly emergency room cases. It’s fast paced. Cases are coming in one after another,” said Dr. Barry Schoelch, Body Imaging Radiologist. “If you have sub-specialists reading the cases, you’re going to get a more precise read, which leads to better patient care especially for emergency pediatric and neurology cases.”
The group’s after hours business model helps hospitals control costs with the new “bundling payment” policies under the Affordable Care Act. Hospitals will now get one check from the government and will sort out who gets paid.
“With bundled payments, it’ll be critical to reduce costs,” Dr. Sean Bryant, Pediatric Radiologist said. “Now when a patient comes in, we can help guide clinicians on what imaging should be done quickly while still providing quality health care, good outcomes and streamlined workflow which reduces costs all around.”
Diversified’s after hours specialists provide ‘final reads’ on tests that reduces the need for re-testing, re-admissions prompting additional costs to patients and hospitals.
