The only ones who are surprised by recent polls that indicated 59% of Americans do not want health care benefits taxed, it is the politicians preparing to include that option in the program they are cooking up. In the Alice in Wonderland world of the U.S. House, they are finding out that the public isn't buying their song and dance routine however, just as they did with the bailouts and stimulus packages, it is the voter be damned.
According to the Washington Times, Sen. Kent Conrad (D.-ND):
If you go to the public and ask them what they think, they don't like it.
However, the Democrats are so used to passing unread bills and foisting the result on a reluctant public, that in all probability they will slip whatever they want into the health care reform bill in the middle of the night, knowing that generally, few in media won't bother to read what is in it either or bother to inform the public about it.
With an approval rate of 17%, one wonders how long Congress will discount what the public wants. Perhaps the Congressional elections in 2010 may give them a wakeup call.

Martha, they obviously forget the job they were sent to do - represent the people. In a democracy, that means the majority of the people. I will be certainly be voting for a wake-up call in 2010. Who was it that said "Throw the bums out!" I like it.
