There are many medicinal and nutritional purposes along with health benefits to eating Prickly Pear Cactus also known as nopal or nopalitos.

Benefits include the vitamins and minerals: B vitamins, fiber, magnesium, iron and protein they provide.

Prickly pear cactus pads and the fruit are both edible. The fruit on the cactus is a nutritious pear shaped fruit when ripe it is red in color and has many health benefits.

The fruit taste best fresh and it can be eaten raw by peeling the skin then eating the flesh, or removing the thorns and throwing in a blender then drinking the juice.

The pads can be eaten raw in salads or cooked, fried, boiled or sautéed in a covered pan.

For years prickly pear cactus has been used to lower blood sugar, help heal stomach problems, constipation, diarrhea, fight viral infections, help ease cold symptoms, and is used topically to treat insect bites, wind burn, sun burn, cuts and bruises.
