Communicating freely was one of the Oracle cards that I pulled recently as part of my regular dream interpretation process. After having meditated and completed my dream journal, I still found myself contemplating this particular card.
So again I reentered meditation, knowing there was more to be revealed. What came up was the spiritually powerful importance of A.C.E. communication (communication that is Authentic, Clear, and Effective).
When communication is done in this manner, we open ourselves to being instruments of empowered change. As Denise Linn says regarding this card, “Communication can heal, free, and transform your life.”
What is communication …?
Communication is the manner in which we convey thoughts, ideas, concepts, and feelings. Keep in mind that a great deal of communication is expressed by way of body language; often times body language is more authentic than the words being spoken. This is also one reason why one should never under estimate the power of a smile.
Communication is also not only how we speak and interact with others, but how we do so with ourselves as well. Self talk can empower us to greater heights or dis-empower us to the brink of despair and suicide.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
Words, ideas, and concepts are powerful and we should never underestimate them. I love the book “Every Word Has Power: Switch on Your Language and Turn on Your Life” by Yvonne Oswald, as well as, the point Myrtle Fillmore (co-founder of Unity) made when she said, “Never put into words anything that you do not want to be true in your life.” By talking about it you increase the energy flow that manifests it. Words are energy and this energy creates a feeling; thus energy in motion = emotion. Have you ever noticed how a compliment or kind word can inspire feelings of being uplifted, inspired, and/or lighter, while words of judgment, criticism, and/or condemnation can depress, upset, and cause emotional unrest? Why is this possible? What is it in a word that could have this possible effect? The energy of the words as well as our personal state of being both come into play to create our overall experiences.
So communication is the act of aligning and coming into congruency with what we desire to see demonstrated in our lives. Effective communication ideally fosters harmony as you are in one accord with those you communicate with; however, there have been those effective orators like Hitler who misused the power of communication to manipulate and manifest death and destruction. It is important for us to assess the messages we hear, as well as, those that we express; what are the motives behind the communication. Is the communication empowering or disempowering? If the communication is disempowering then what can be done to realign the communication and raise the quality of it?
Looking at the root of the word communication, we find similar words that can give further insight into the importance of communication. Words such as:
Commune
Communion
Conversation
Convention
Convent
What do you sense from each of these words?
Can you sense a common thread between them all?
What about the act of “joining as one?”
Each of these hints at the basic idea of unification, unity, and togetherness.
When we align with the ideas that communication is
A – Authentic, therefore it is truth and integrity.
C – Clear and effective.
E – Empowering and affirming as we empower and build up.
ACE communication is therefore healing and it fosters wholeness as we speak from a place of power knowing that our words are creative. This occurs when we are in a personal state of alignment with Source. Think of how a cell phone that drops calls or picks up static as a symbol of the person who is out of alignment. This person is not in congruency which will make their communication less effective; remember that I am defining effective as being empowering and healing as well!
Take some time to start watching AND listening to how people around you are communicating. As you stand in line at Target, at the bank, at work, and at home, listen to what is being said. And as you listen, keep this scripture in mind, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Proverbs 18:21
What kinds of words do they use repeatedly? Did you know that many communication gurus say that you can identify a person’s learning style by listening to the words they use?
For example:
Visual people say things like,
“Do you see what I’m saying?”
“It looked too good to be true.”
“I see your point.”
They speak of colors, sights, and how things look.
Auditory people say things like,
“Your idea sounds great.”
“You never listen to me.”
“Do you hear what I’m saying?”
They speak of sounds, noises, and various auditory markers.
Kinesthetic people say things like,
“I feel you.”
“His words didn’t move me.”
“What vibe did you get from the meeting?”
They speak in terms of tactile feelings, movement and sensations as well as emotional feelings.
So take some time to listen actively to what others are saying.
Active listening is listening fully to what is being said not hearing what is being said while thinking what you want to say next. So take time to actively listen to what they are saying. Once you feel particularly adept at listening, take some time to then observe what is being communicated by way of body language. Do the words spoken match the body language?
Next, having done this, start observing what you are communicating verbally and bodily to others. Lastly, start observing what you are communicating verbally and bodily to yourself!
Feeling particularly skilled at this, I challenge you to take one full day to communicate only positive, affirming, and empowering things. Speak, write, and present by way of body language ONLY that which is positive, affirming, and empowering! No teeth sucking, eye rolling, criticizing, etc. If you find yourself having to fire someone or offer a “criticism” … can you do so in a healing, affirming, empowering manner? That is your challenge. Let me know how it went once you are done. What did you observe? How did it feel? And most of all what did this challenge do for YOU? I look forward to hearing about your results.
Love, light and blessings xoxo
