The spring and summer of 2013 is going to bring big things for Arrows at Dawn out of the Owatonna and St. Paul areas. After getting a new guitarist, Cliffton Wales own Matt Wallberg, and the stickman of Eden, Adam Szczepaniak in the last year, a whole new dynamic was brought to the band with a few big shows and an EP coming this summer.
On the major transition, lead singer Tim Andrews notes it's significance: "It's pretty huge. It doesn't feel like it now, but I think there was a point where [Andrews and bassist Patrick Zak] felt like we were taking on a lot." Adding to that, Zak interjected "It was like starting over again. but with the same songs, a better drive, and a better understanding of what we want to accomplish."
One of the exciting things about Arrows, aside from new material that was produced by Wally the Wizard of Pacific Underground Recording and Entertainment, is their spirit of determined prospects (as they reassuringly told me, Wembley or bust) that goes hand and hand with an experience few bands of this caliber have gained insight on. Andrews: "I think we know a little more now," with member chemistry going incredibly well. Szczepaniak: "I feel like we've all gotten to know each other very well, and it shows with the music's energy."
Musically speaking, they have post-alt rock tendencies, but are not afraid to explore considering the wide spectrum the band potentially has, between the affiliated bands of Wallberg and Szczepaniak, to the color palette of influences ranging from indie pop to the Foo Fighters. It creates an air of productivity, as Andrews and Zak are from Owatonna, but Wallberg and Szczepaniak being from St. Paul. It tends to limit practice and available time together, but when they do, they run as lean, efficient band. This allows members to easily bounce ideas of each other while the writing process takes place. After all, this is a band that supposedly has no philosophy, they just play music and they do it damn well.
Philosophies aside, this is a band bubbling with an incredible amount about to happen, between shows at the "What's Up Lounge" in Mankato (March 9th) and the "Fine Line Music Cafe'" in Minneapolis (March 15th) and their newest EP "No Place To Hide" to debut in the summer of 2013. With all the momentum being apparent by the radio play from stations coast to coast, Wallberg, with a determined outlook states "We're going to keep the momentum rolling with more songwriting for an album next year... we want to use this EP as a springboard."
