Head to South Jordan for Utah's Early Hunter/Jumper Show - April 6 -10

The first big show of the season is always exciting. This week marks the start of the 2011 hunter/jumper events with The Early Show at the South Jordan Equestrian Park (2100 West, 11400 South).

Classes will be held in the indoor arena. The show begins at 9:30 Wednesday morning April 6 and continues through Sunday April 10. You can find the complete schedule at the UHJA website. Admission is free for spectators*.

Riders of all ages will participate in dozens of classes, from low cross bars (late Saturday afternoon) to the excitement of fences up to 3'6 (both Thursday and Friday morning). There will also be elegant equitation classes on Sunday.

For those attending the show as observors, it's important to be respectful of the competitors and their horses. Riders have put in countless hours to prepare for these highly anticipated events.

*A few simple suggestions for the viewing audience:

Set cell phones on vibrate

Answer necessary calls away from the show ring

Take the littlest fans outside if they need to let off a little steam and make some noise

Avoid hanging over or leaning on the rails alongside the arena while anyone is riding

Refrain from running or excessive activity that could disrupt the focus of the horse and rider

Keep conversations in the bleachers at a reasonable volume, so as not to distract other spectators

Loud noise or boysterous antics from the sidelines can be frustrating and upsetting to humans and animals alike. Don't forget that the horses and their riders are in a strange environment, amidst the sometimes nerve-wracking demands of competition. Help contribute to a calming and positive ambience if at all possible.

With a little consideration, it's easy to watch these wonderful events, celebrate our local athletes, and support them in a way that will add to - rather than detract from - the overall experience.

Equestrians - riders and spectators alike - are sure to have a wonderful time at The Early Show this week. See you in South Jordan!
