Head-on train crash in Austria injures dozens of commuter passengers (Photos)

A head-on commuter train crash in Vienna has left 41 people hurt- five seriously hurt on Monday Reuters has reported Jan. 21. It happened during Monday morning rush hour when the commuter train was crowded. The driver of one of the trains and one other person remain in life threatening critical condition after the accident, Austrian emergency services reported.

A spokeswoman for the Austrian railways, Sarah Nettel stated that operations on the line had been switched to manual after a technical defect with a shunting switch. It was also mentioned that human error has not been ruled out as a cause of the mishap.

"A train got permission to travel when it should not have," Nettel said.

She also mentioned that the head-on crash happened because of a technical error. One of the commuter trains was given a signal to go onward when it should have been signaled to wait on the other train. Nettel stated that there would be further inquiries into the train crash, but at the moment, the company was focused on taking care of the passengers.
