And then there were three: Giants Ridge, Lutsen Mountains, and Spirit Mountain are the only resorts left in Minnesota that are open on weekdays. Afton Alps, Buck Hill, and Wild Mountain are open for the coming weekend, and Welch Village might be, but Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area is closed so that it can begin work on a new chalet. Trollhaugen, a Wisconsin resort that is within a short driving distance of some parts of the Twin Cities metro, is also closed until the weekend.
If you make the drive up north, you will be rewarded with more terrain than you will find around here. Spirit Mountain claims a 700-foot vertical drop, Lutsen comes close to 1,000, and Giants Ridge has 500 feet.
When will they close? Giants Ridge plans a "bonus weekend" of April 11-13. Spirit Mountain has planned to close on April 6, though it may continue beyond that; the Duluth public schools have spring break the following week, which could boost demand. Lutsen Lutsen plans to hold out the longest, with a projected closing date of April 20.
Of course, any projections are subject to modification due to weather patterns or a significant drop-off in business.
