A man in love will go to great lengths to please his partner but one man’s actions created The Carey Foundation, a support system also known as “The TuTu Project.” Its mission is to provide support to women diagnosed with breast cancer along with the survivors and their families.
How it started
Bob Carey is a photographer and took a picture of himself wearing a pink tutu in 2003 for a media campaign. His wife Linda apparently enjoyed it so much that when she was diagnosed with breast cancer later that year, he decided to implement additional ‘pink tutu’ photos during her recovery/treatments for her enjoyment.
During her cancer treatments, his goal was to lift her spirits and put a smile on her face so he took pictures of himself wearing a pink tutu and sent them to her phone. It was a huge hit with Linda and her friends so Carey would visit different locations to snap photos of himself wearing this pink tutu. The silly pictures were a welcomed diversion in a time when laughter was scarce, and needed.
Breast cancer incidences decline
Behind lung cancer, breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women. Breast cancer incidences in women rose for over two decades before decreasing in 2000 with the biggest decline happening between 2002 and 2003.
According to the American Cancer Society, this remarkable decrease may have been associated with the decline in hormonal therapy after menopause. Unfortunately, Linda was not spared this diagnosis.
