Seven-year-old Josh Hadfield can fall asleep every five minutes even when he is walking, eating and swimming. His mother says that he sleeps for 19 hours a day and is taking legal action against the government because she claims Josh's condition – called narcolepsy – has been caused by the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix.
Caroline, who is from Frome, Somerset, England, said that within weeks of the vaccine she noticed a drastic change in her son. She said, "He was a perfectly healthy, energetic four-year-old before the vaccination, but within two weeks he was getting more tired and after three weeks he was sleeping for 19 hours." Josh is now on medication to control the condition but the family live in fear of narcolepsy attacks.
The vaccine was widely used in the United Kingdom during the 2009-2010 flu pandemic. Following a number of trials across Europe, however, it is no longer in use after links between the drug and narcolepsy were found in youngsters from Finland, Sweden and Ireland. Caroline and Josh's dad Charlie have joined a group of other parents preparing legal action after their children developed similar symptoms.
A recently publised report has shown that there is a ten to 16-fold increase in cases since the vaccines were given. 795 people across Europe have reported developing narcolepsy since 2009 when the vaccine's use began. Europe's drugs regulator has ruled that Pandemrix should no longer be used in people aged under 20.
