“…perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea…” Coast Guard De Falco on the phone with Captian Schettino.
In the desperation of another’s need many people who demand the right to ‘control their own ship’ never take the responsibility as the captain over it when it capsizes. Hence, the alluring idleness pervades the lackadaisical mind as they stand gazing at the destruction of others’ lives while there mere escape from the pit of hell has only dithered.
The anomalous appearance that something has gone wrong is only a sign to jump ship but never enough to strike the courage to get back on board and give one’s life for another. Yet many have become the astute observer looking intently at their condition and the others who they have brought alone, saying,
“I am here to coordinate the rescue…” (Schettino)
The brazen importunity given to the men and women who have been rescued from the pits of hell, not by their might nor power, but by the Spirit of God, no longer has any bearing on the darken soul of the delivered to go back. To these weakened and self-kryptonited sons and daughters, God cries,
“…get on that ship…! And what they need… You need to tell me if there are children, women or people in need of assistance.”
And like the captain standing on “safe ground” many Christians idly stand by watching other people’s insolvent life drown in the sea of bitterness, despair, hurt, and or pain.
“Don’t make any more excuses!” De Falco
Living life on earth as a follower of Christ doesn’t constitute a lifestyle lavished in riches. It rather, is a life that releases a greater Life from within to the one in need of life. But it takes GUTS!
Never once has God told any of his people to do something that is easy: For Noah to build an ark, for Adam to name the animals, for Moses to lead the Israelites, and Jonah to preach to Nineveh, for Samson to kill a thousand men, for Jesus to die for murder’s, thieves, prostitutes, adulators, homosexuals, lesbians, and you.
As captain Schettino gazed at his sinking ship, he watched as people escaped by the thread of their teeth. Boasting to himself that his life has been saved from the jaws of death, his blissful heart is too consumed with self to realize that hell is what he must be saved from, not death.
“For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:36-38
