Or son. Or daughter. But in regard to women, this column believes the correct word is lesbian.
What is worse: conservative politicians who have campaigned hard and long to curtail if not totally eliminate the rights for the gay and lesbian community and then change once one of their children has come out?
Or those who don’t?
Not many folks fall in the latter category. Alan Keyes, the truly insane perennial candidate from the great state of Maryland actually does.
He in fact ambled over to Illinois (carpetbagger) to run against a very neophyte Barack Obama for the prize of a United States Senate Seat. It is stated that the local GOP folks drafted Keyes to carry their banner after their presumed candidate was felled by a sex scandal.
Keyes did lose, as he has done in every election while his opponent Obama went on to serve in the Senate. And now holds a position with a national constituency.
Anyway, meandering back to topic, Keyes, an ultra conservative stopped financially supporting his lesbian daughter but claims he did not disown her.
Potato, po-tah- to.
This young woman was studying at Harvard at the time, something that would instill many parents with pride.
Michele Bachman remains rigidly anti- gay despite having a lesbian stepsister she grew up with and had once been very close. No jokes here about her husband.
Most politicians are so self-centered that their own progeny causes them to pivot 180 degrees on the topic of same sex marriage, which functions as the barometer of tolerance toward the gay community.
Whom you ask? The latest of course is Rob Portman. In the past: Dick Cheney leaps to mind.
This is not restricted to Republicans. Maryland’s own Steny Hoyer had a change of heart and a daughter who outed herself.
If you opposed gay rights, then be consistent. Continue to hate regardless of your offspring.
However if this is the trend, let’s start having some political progeny who are poor, need an abortion or birth control and are counting on Social Security.
Or converts to Islam.
You get the idea.
