An HBO show ending in 2013 is "Enlightened," the critically acclaimed comedy starring Laura Dern. According to boston.com on March 20, HBO called the decision to end the HBO show "very difficult."
Laura Dern and Mike White created "Enlightened," and the two co-starred in the series as well. Luke Wilson and Dianne Ladd were also members of the all-star cast in the show about a manic-depressive who becomes an activist. Despite the critical acclaim, and a big Golden Globes win for Dern for her role on the show, the HBO show ending received very low ratings.
HBO originally had the show on the chopping block earlier in the year, but decided to give it another chance. The 30-minute dark comedy saw Dern's character, a midlevel corporate executive, suffer a nervous breakdown and then work to fight her way back. The first season premiere only saw 210,000 viewers tune in, while the second episode dropped to 190,000 viewers.
Those numbers made "Enlightened" one of the lowest rated shows on HBO. The network felt strongly about the show and worked to increase the awareness of the series. Despite ht awards, the strugglers continues and it was just a matter of time before the HBO show ended.
