HBO scores big with 2014 Primetime Emmy nominations

For years, the HBO cable network has reigned supreme when it comes to Emmy nods, and 2014 is no different. When Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly announced the plethora of nominations on July 10, 2014, HBO broke away from the pack, scoring an unbelievable 99 nods. The next network with the most nods, CBS, came in a distant second with 47 nominations.

But really, when one thinks about the shows on HBO, it’s really no surprise that they’ve landed so many accolades. For starters, there’s “Game of Thrones,” which landed noms for everything from “best drama” and an array of acting categories (particularly supporting actor Peter Dinklage as Tyrion and supporting actress Lena Headey as Cersei), to writing, direction, art direction, and, obviously, a whole lot more.

Even so, the TV series based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling books accounts for only 19 of the total 99 nominations that HBO received. The Larry Kramer autobiographical movie “The Normal Heart” received 16, and the crime drama “True Detective” landed its fair share as well including not one, but two, nominations in the ‘best actor’ category, thanks to both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

One of the more surprising nods for the cable network came in the ‘best comedy series’ category: Silicon Valley, which most definitely deserved the recognition. Of course, “Veep” is nominated too, as it has been in the past. To get a full list of all the nominations for the network, see their full press release.

When it comes down to it though, HBO is already a winner. Nearly every category has a nomination from the network, whether it be for a movie, miniseries, or TV show. Proof, once again, that this channel is worth paying for.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards are set to air on August 25, 2014 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
