Horse racing fans and television drama lovers are lining up prime viewing spots for “Luck,” HBO’s new horse racing series, which premieres Sunday evening, January 29th. (A special advance preview of the pilot was revealed January 22nd on HBO.)
Immediately after the January 29th showing of “Luck,” the second episode will be available on HBO Go for online viewing.
Created by television producer and Thoroughbred horse racing fan David Milch (“Deadwood” and “NYPD Blue”) and directed by Michael Mann (“Ali” and “Public Enemies”), “Luck” takes an inside look at the racing industry. Fast races and high-stakes gambling mark the pilot plotlines.
The one-hour drama series focuses on gambler and bookmaker Chester “Ace” Bernstein (played by award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman), who has recently been released from prison, as the story starts. Bernstein hooks up with his chauffeur, Gus Demitriou (played by Dennis Farina) for a win-big scheme at California’s Santa Anita Racetrack.
“I don’t trust anyone,” Hoffman’s Bernstein says in the promotional trailer. “Not even myself.”
Nick Nolte and John Ortiz appear as horse trainers. Veteran jockey and horse racing sportscaster Gary Stevens is also featured. Additional cast members include Joan Allen, Kerry Condon, Ritchie Coster, Kevin Dunn, Jason Gedrick, Ian Hart, Jill Hennessy, Richard Kind, Tom Payne and more.
Much of the series was filmed on-site at Santa Anita, with crowd scenes and real-life horse racing action.
“Luck” will race from the starting gate at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
