Deadline Hollywood reported today that HBO has officially renewed “Game of Thrones” for a fifth and sixth season. This comes hot on yesterday’s news that the fourth season “Game of Thrones” premiere increased its audience by 20% over last year’s finale and over 52% compared to the ratings for the third season premiere. The series is based on the award-winning fantasy novels by veteran author George R.R. Martin.
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said in a press release, “’Game of Thrones’ is a phenomenon like no other. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”
The current season covers the second half of the third book in George R.R. Martin’s planned seven volume saga. Fans expect that “Game of Thrones” will need seven or eight seasons to adequately cover all the books. This is the first time HBO has renewed “Game of Thrones” for multiple seasons at the same time.
