HBO debuts illuminating character art tied to new season of ‘Game of Thrones’ (Photos)

For two years, we’ve known “winter is coming.” Now in less than 30 days it will get even closer as HBO debuts the third season of its Emmy winning smash “Game of Thrones.” Today, the network PR machine revealed the latest tool in its arsenal with a dozen stunning new character posters that could provide clues to the new storylines.

The 12 images feature headshots of the show’s major characters (and remember there are a ton of them), with a light and dark glow added to each face. On first glance there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how each character is lit up, but as fans of the show have learned; looks can be deceiving.

Based on the books by George R.R. Martin, the series’ return comes at a much needed time for the network as the abrupt cancellation of last year’s “Luck” left programmers with a gaping hole that they were temporarily able to fill thanks to the runaway success of Lena Dunham’s “Girls.”

“Thrones” debuted in 2011 and quickly became a fan favorite that has also won over the critics. Series breakout Peter Dinklage has even walked away with the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor and the series itself has earned two consecutive Best Drama nominations.

The posters come not long after the recent official trailer reveal of the new season which reminded audiences just how much they missed the HBO staple.

Game of Thrones” returns March 31st at 9 p.m. on HBO
